Not every bedroom has a good closet. Older Houston homes often have small reach-ins. Townhomes may have limited wall space. Rooms converted from studies or dens may have no closet at all.
A wardrobe solves this. Foscari Interiors designs built-in and freestanding wardrobes that provide organized storage with finished, furniture-quality fronts. This guide explains the options.
When a Wardrobe Makes Sense
- A bedroom has no closet, or only a very small one
- A guest room or child’s room needs more storage
- A primary bedroom needs storage in addition to the walk-in closet
- A townhome or condo bedroom needs to make the most of one wall
- A home office or den is becoming a bedroom
A floor-to-ceiling wardrobe wall often holds more than a conventional reach-in closet, because the full height and width are planned for storage.
Built-In vs. Freestanding
Built-in wardrobes run wall to wall and floor to ceiling, so they look like part of the architecture. They make the most of the space and are the most common choice in our projects.
Freestanding wardrobes are self-contained pieces of furniture. They suit rentals, rooms where the layout may change, or spaces where a built-in is not practical.
Doors and Fronts
- Hinged doors give full access to each section and suit most rooms.
- Sliding doors save floor space where there is not room for doors to swing, which is common in smaller bedrooms.
- Glass doors in clear, smoked or bronze tones can display clothing and add depth, often with interior lighting.
- Handleless fronts keep the wall calm and minimal.

What Goes Inside
The interior is designed around what will be stored: long and short hanging, shelves, drawers, shoe storage, pull-out trouser and accessory racks, and lighting. Children’s wardrobes can be planned with adjustable sections that change as they grow.

Finishes
Wardrobes are often the largest piece of furniture in a bedroom, so the finish matters. Options include wood veneers, matte lacquers, textured surfaces, glass and aluminum. Many clients coordinate wardrobe finishes with the bedroom furniture, bathroom vanity or walk-in closet.
